Overview

During this walking tour you will see the only Central European Jewish Quarter that survived the holocaust, and discover the triumphs and tragedies of this remarkable and resilient community.

Wander through Josefov, the Jewish Quarter, encountering traditions, customs and stories at every turn. See the oldest preserved synagogue in Europe, which some say holds the bones of the Golem, a mythical monster made of clay brought to life. The Old New Synagogue is one of six in the quarter, each holding priceless Torah scrolls and beautifully decorated by skilled craftsmen. Continue exploring the ghetto to discover the Kafka monument and the Jewish Town Hall with its quaint little tower.

Visit the oldest Jewish cemetery in Europe, dating back to the 15th century when it was in use for 300 years. Here the huge demand for graves meant that people were buried twelve deep in places. As you explore this lively and beautiful part of the city, you’ll also learn about the persecution of the Jews, the horror of the Pogroms, and the tragic fate of the thousands of Czech Jews who were taken to the concentration camp at Theresienstadt, never to return. Rich in memories and both sombre and joyful in turn, the Jewish Quarter tells an inspirational story of adversity, courage and hope.
