Overview

Discover the majestic Castel Sant'Angelo and witness a sterling example of Roman art, weaponry, and architecture. One of the most remarkable buildings in Italy, Castel Sant’ Angelo literally translates to ‘Castle of the holy angel’.

Known as Hadrian's Tomb, the Castel Sant'Angelo is a fortress a short distance from the Vatican City, located on the right bank of the Tiber. Overlook the Tiber from this iconic mausoleum-turned-museum and see the beautiful angel sculptures along the Ponte Sant'Angelo bridge, also known as the Bridge of Angels.

Built in the year 185, the monument served as a military building and a place of refuge for popes during the sieges in 1527. The monument is split into seven floors that can be reached by a spiral ramp that first reaches the chamber of ashes and subsequently the cells in which a number of historical figures were incarcerated.

Advancing toward the upper part of the castle you will find different rooms that functioned as a Papal residence, decorated with perfectly preserved frescoes from the Renaissance period, besides an impressive collection of weapons.

Delve into the history of this ancient fortress with your audio guide. Admire the painting and ancient fortified walls and statues and finally enjoy spectacular views of the city from the terrace.
